Is the new admission procedure proposed by Delhi University likely to work better? Education Times finds out

VALSON THAMPU
Principal, St Stephen’s College
St Stephen’s College ha been following its own system of admission, a power vested to us by Delhi University. The centralized admission process, which was I place for years, had its own advantages as students did not have to run from pillar to post to procure the individual forms. Also, it allowed them to list their preferences in one single form. This new proposal will simplify the process and help students to establish a rapport with their college of preference. It is a welcome move but colleges need to be careful while preparing the cut-off lists to avoid over-admission.

The admission process, I fell, will be confusing. Earlier, students used to scan t he cut-off marks of the previous year to gauge what the current cut-offs would be like and then accordingly fill in the OMR forms. Since there won’t be any central cut-off list as per the new system, students will have no idea where to apply because colleges will declare their own cut-offs. So they will have to individually go to colleges and find out. The process would be extremely time-consuming. More cu-off lists may help students but admissions re likely to be on a first-come-first-serve basis.

JM KHURANA
Dean, Students’ Welfare, Delhi University
We have come out with this proposal only after several rounds of discussion with the principals of various affiliated colleges. This new proposal will reduce all the hassles that students and parents have been facing during the pre-admission process. Now once the cut-off list is declared by the college, students can apply directly, provided they clear the cut-off. No student can e denied admission irrespective of the number of seats. Outstation candidate will no longer have to physically come and check their status. Now they can check updates on the cut-off lists and number of seats available in various colleges online.

VINAY KUMAR SRIVASTAVA
Principal, Hindu College
The new admission process may cut down a lot of time, resource and paperwork because we used to get stacks of admission forms, both OMR and college forms, and it was difficult to scan them to reach a cut-off have to be adopted to reach that cut-off list as even an increase or decrease of .25% in the cut-off mark can make a lot of difference. So our major worry is that it may lead to over-admission. On the other hand, the system is student-friendly and reduces the burden of moving from one college to another.

NEETU DABAS
Secretary, Delhi University Students Union (DUSU)
The system will promote transparency and reduce hassles. Earlier students had to first fill n the OMR form and then fill in individual college forms to be one the safe side. Traditionally, colleges used to come out with three cut-off lists. This time they are proposing to come out with five-lists, which will allow more students to take admission in DU. Things will become simpler if students can register online in the coming academic session.
